COPE, Inc. (Center of Protective Environment) is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 to address the problems of family and relationship violence. From the beginning, COPE has been dedicated to intervention and prevention of family and relationship violence by offering a range of services including crisis intervention, shelter, advocacy, support, outreach, education and counseling.

What is Family and Relationship Violence? 

Any act of forceful control of a partner  or family member. This violence is the least reported crime in the country and is our nation's number one public health problem. Everyone involved in the family or relationship is adversely affected.

COPE Services

24 hour Crisis phone line 1-866-350-2673. Trained staff are available to assist callers with family violence issues.

Shelter Services: Safety and shelter, food, clothing, transportation, assistance in filing Orders of Protection (restraining orders), and counseling for adults and children experienceing family violence.

Advocacy Services: Services that link people  experiencing family violence to legal, housing, and employment services as well as assistance in filing orders of protection and other community resources.

Counseling Services: Individual and group counseling addresses issues of family and relationship violence for domestic violence victims, perpetrators, and their children. Groups focus on building and acquiring skills to avoid further abuse and family violence.

Outreach and Education Services:
Trained professionals are available to offer presentations to schools, churches, Law Enforcement, medical and legal professionals, civic organizations and businesses. These presentations convey valuable information about preventing and dealing with family and relationship violence and dating violence.

If you have to leave your residence, try to take personal belongings with you, such as food stamps, valuable papers, (birth certificates, divorce decrees, etc...), prescriptions. If you stay at the COPE, shelter, food, hygiene items and donated clothing will be provided to you at no charge.

Inquire about the "Family Violence Protection Act" and the "Crime Victims Reparation Act." Financial assistance may be available to crime victims through the NM Crime Victims Reparation Commission. The COPE office can assist you with any questions.

** Note: Ask the investigating Officer to make a written report. This does not mean that criminal charges are being filed, but that there will be a record.
