As colder weather returns to Ruidoso, the Village Fire Department reminds residents and visitors to use their fireplaces safely this winter. A warm fire brings comfort and charm to mountain living—but it also carries risks if not used properly. Chimney fires, carbon monoxide exposure, and accidental burns are preventable with a few simple precautions.

Essential Fireplace Safety Tips

1. Schedule Regular Maintenance

Have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually by a certified professional. Over time, creosote—a highly flammable residue—can build up and cause chimney fires. Professional sweeps can also check for blockages and structural issues before the heating season begins.

2. Burn the Right Fuel

Use only seasoned, dry wood that has been cured for at least six months. This wood burns cleaner and produces less creosote. Avoid burning treated wood, plastics, or trash, which release harmful fumes.

3. Install and Maintain Safety Equipment

Smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors save lives. Install them on every level of your home, test monthly, and replace batteries annually.

4. Practice Safe Operation

Keep anything flammable—like blankets, paper, and holiday décor—at least three feet from the fireplace. Always use a sturdy screen to contain sparks, and never leave fires unattended, especially with children or pets nearby.

5. Educate Your Family

Talk with children about fire safety and establish clear household rules. Fireplaces are for warmth and enjoyment, not play.

If an Emergency Occurs

If you suspect a chimney fire or another fireplace-related emergency, act fast—evacuate if necessary and call 911. The Ruidoso Fire Department is ready to respond and assist.

Stay cozy and safe this winter by following these simple guidelines. For more information or to request a home-safety inspection, contact the Ruidoso Fire Department at 575-257-4116 or visit https://www.ruidoso-nm.gov/ruidoso-fire-department.
