Lincoln National Forest decreases fire danger rating

Rating reduced to 'low' for all three forest districts

The Lincoln National Forest has reduced the fire danger rating from “moderate” to “low” effective August 31, 2023.

The lowered rating applies to Smokey Bear, Sacramento, and Guadalupe Ranger Districts in the Lincoln National Forest.

When the fire danger is “low” it means that fuels do not ignite easily from small embers, but a more intense heat source, such as lightning, may start fires in duff or dry rotten wood. Fires in the open dry grasslands may burn easily a few hours after a rain, but most wood fires will spread slowly, creeping or smoldering.

As always, it is important that visitors are aware of the risks and take the proper precautions. Unattended or improperly extinguished campfires are a major contributor to wildfire incidents.

Ensure all fires are completely extinguished by completely drowning the site with water and making sure the campfire site is cool to the touch before leaving. Additionally, avoid parking or driving in tall grass, where engine heat can start a grassfire.

These precautions are essential in preventing wildfires in the area.  For more information and updates on conditions in Lincoln National Forest, please visit www.fs.usda.gov/lincoln.
