As of July 4, 2024, the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 5 provides the final update on the South Fork and Salt Fires. These fires, which began on June 17, 2024, have significantly impacted the Ruidoso and Mescalero areas, affecting mixed conifer forests, grasslands, and pine/juniper habitats.

Containment: South Fork – 87%; Salt – 84%
Resources: 3 crews, 1 helicopter, 6 engines, 2 bulldozers, and 4 water tenders remain active.
Highlights:
Transition: Control of the South Fork and Salt Fires will transition to local agencies, including the BIA, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Lincoln National Forest, and New Mexico State Forestry Division on July 7, 2024, at 6:00 PM.
Public Information Changes: Updates on social media and the media phone line will cease tonight, July 4, at 8:00 PM. Public phone lines will disconnect on July 7, 2024, at 8:00 PM. Further updates will be provided by local agencies and through designated channels.

Fireworks Safety: As Independence Day is celebrated, please be mindful that fireworks can pose a fire risk in the dry conditions prevailing across the region. Fire restrictions remain in effect; please refer to the "Closures and Restrictions" section below for details.

Current Situation: Fire activity remains minimal with isolated hot spots. Crews continue suppression repair and structure assessments, emphasizing safety in ongoing operations.

Weather Forecast: High pressure returns with sunny skies and reduced afternoon clouds and thunderstorm chances. Warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity are expected today.
Closures and Restrictions:
Emergency Orders: A South Fork Fire Emergency Closure Order remains in effect for national forest lands in the Smokey Bear Ranger District. Details are available at FS Website.
