Lincoln National Forest Moves to 'High' Fire Danger Rating

Press Release

Lincoln National Forest

Alamogordo, New Mexico, February 10, 2025 —Effective immediately the Lincoln National Forest has increased the fire danger rating from “moderate” to “high” on all ranger districts.

The increase comes after an analysis of moisture levels and extended weather forecasts for the area point to an elevated risk of fire.

When the fire danger rating is “high,” fires can start easily and small fuels (such as grasses and needles) will ignite readily. Unattended campfires and brush fires are more likely to escape. Fires can spread easily, with some areas of high intensity burning on slopes or areas of dense vegetation.

Please continue to use good fire safety practices as you visit the area. Ensure your campfires are completely dead-out and the ground in the campfire ring is cool to the touch to avoid an abandoned campfire reigniting. For more information about fire safety, visit the Lincoln National Forest Facebook page and the Smokey Fire Safety webpage.
