Prepare for Wildfire: Free Wildland Fire Safety Session with Local Experts on November 12, 2024

Wildland fires are an increasing threat in our area, and being prepared can significantly improve your safety. Don’t miss this chance to boost your wildfire readiness and learn from local experts committed to protecting our community.

Join us for a free Wildland Fire Preparedness session on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at the ENMU-Ruidoso Campus (709 Mechem Drive). This informative event will help you understand how to prepare for wildland fires and work together to keep our community safe.

Why Attend?

This session is part of an ongoing series designed to educate and empower residents on all aspects of wildland fires. By attending, you’ll learn how to protect yourself, your family, and your property during wildfire season. The more informed you are, the better prepared you’ll be to act quickly and effectively in the event of a fire.

What You’ll Learn:

This session will focus on helping attendees “Learn the Lingo of Wildland Fire Terminology.” Understanding key terms can improve communication during fire emergencies and clarify decisions about evacuation, preparation, and fire safety.

In addition, the forum will cover:

  • Basic education on wildland fires and their impact

  • Practical steps for personal and community preparedness

  • The importance of collaboration between fire agencies and residents

  • A safe, open environment for learning and discussion

This is not an event for complaints or grievances. Instead, the goal is to foster collaboration and understanding, equipping residents with the tools and knowledge to stay safe during fire season.

Meet the Experts:

You’ll hear from a panel of seasoned wildland fire professionals, all with deep ties to Ruidoso:

  • Bequi Livingston: A pioneer in wildland fire management, Bequi began her career in 1979 on the Smokey Bear Ranger District and was the first woman to serve on the Smokey Bear Hotshot crew. Now retired from the US Forest Service, she continues to share her extensive knowledge with the community.

  • Wesley Hall: A Ruidoso native with a long family history of firefighting, Wesley is a Fire Application Specialist with the USDA Forest Service. He develops new decision-support technology for wildland fire management and brings a fresh perspective on fire safety.

  • Rich Dolphin: Former Superintendent of the Smokey Bear Hotshot Crew, Rich has had a distinguished career as a wildland firefighter. Though retired, he remains involved in fire management as part of Complex Incident Management Teams.

  • Robby Hall: A longtime resident and former firefighter with the Ruidoso Fire Department, Robby now volunteers with the Bonito Volunteer Fire Department. Known for his willingness to help the community, he’s always ready to lend a hand, whether it’s fighting fires or supporting neighbors.
