Prescribed Burn Scheduled for Lincoln National Forest’s Sacramento Ranger District

Lincoln National Forest will implement a prescribed burn on the Sacramento Ranger District starting tomorrow, December 3, 2024, with operations expected to continue through the week, weather permitting. This initiative is part of the 16 Springs Project Area, a comprehensive forest management strategy aimed at enhancing forest health and reducing wildfire risk.

Crews plan to target 350 acres within the project area using controlled burns to manage vegetation. Smoke may be visible in nearby communities, including 16 Springs, Mayhill, Cloudcroft, and Hope. Residents and visitors are advised to expect increased traffic as crews work in the area.

Safety Precautions and Monitoring
The prescribed burn will only proceed if conditions meet strict safety and environmental criteria outlined in the Lincoln National Forest’s fire management plan. In the event conditions are unsuitable, the project may be postponed on short notice.

After ignition, crews will monitor the burn site for residual hot spots and assess forest health improvements. Signs will be placed around the project area to alert the public.

Long-Term Forest Management
The 16 Springs Project Area employs prescribed burns, fuel mastication, and timber removal to mitigate wildfire risk and promote ecosystem health. These measures are part of Lincoln National Forest’s broader commitment to sustainable land management practices.
