Village of Ruidoso Issues Temporary Abatement of Annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) Adjustment to Utility Rates to Help Offset Economic Hardship
On July 27, 2022, Ruidoso Mayor Lynn D. Crawford, Mayor issued Executive Order 2022-04, which states the CPI adjustment to utility rates as provided in the Village of Ruidoso Code of Ordinances shall not be applied until the entire Governing Body of the Village of Ruidoso has met in open session to discuss this matter further.
Inflation in the United States is currently at a 40-year high, and working families around New Mexico and the country are suffering from the rising cost of food, gasoline, and all other commodities.
The Village of Ruidoso is committed to the continued protection of the health, safety, and welfare of its residents, including economic welfare, and the Village of Ruidoso Code of Ordinances, provides that the minimum monthly utility rates shall be adjusted annually using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as calculated and published by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions.
The CPI, as calculated and published by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, is 9%, an increase in utility rates that could have a disastrous effect on the financial livelihoods of many Ruidoso residents already struggling with the effects of a global economic crisis that experts forecast will only worsen in the coming weeks and months.
