Village of Ruidoso Mayor Issues Executive Order to Provide Relief for Property Owners Affected by Wildfires and Floods

In a significant move to aid the recovery efforts following the devastation caused by the South Fork and Salt Fires and subsequent flooding, Mayor Lynn D. Crawford has issued Executive Order 2024-01. The order, signed on September 3, 2024, aims to provide financial relief to property owners whose homes and commercial buildings were destroyed by these disasters.

Background of the Crisis

On June 17, 2024, two wildfires erupted in the National Forest adjacent to the Village of Ruidoso, swiftly spreading and engulfing hundreds of structures while charring thousands of acres of forest land in and around the village. The fires, known as the South Fork and Salt Fires, prompted immediate state and federal disaster declarations, making federal funds available to support recovery efforts. The destruction was further compounded by heavy rains that triggered flooding in areas scarred by the fires, damaging properties throughout Ruidoso and its surrounding communities.

Executive Order Details

Recognizing the overwhelming impact on the community and the financial burden of rebuilding, Mayor Crawford’s executive order mandates the following:

  • Waiver of Fees: Effective immediately, the Village of Ruidoso will waive all permitting and installation fees usually charged for rehabilitating properties destroyed by the South Fork and Salt Fires and subsequent floods. This measure aims to reduce the financial strain on property owners who need to rebuild their homes and commercial facilities from the ground up.

  • Duration of the Order: Executive Order 2024-01 will remain in effect until it is revoked at a future date, providing ongoing relief as the community navigates the long road to recovery.

Mayor Crawford's Commitment to Recovery

In issuing this executive order, Mayor Crawford emphasized the village’s commitment to supporting residents and business owners in rebuilding. "We understand the immense challenges our community faces in the wake of these disasters," said Crawford. "By waiving these fees, we hope to alleviate some of the financial burdens and expedite the recovery process for all affected."

This executive action marks a crucial step in the Village of Ruidoso's efforts to recover from one of its most devastating natural disasters. The community remains united in its resolve to rebuild and restore the village's vibrant life.
