Prepare Now: Your Essential Disaster Preparedness Kit

In an era marked by increasing natural disasters, readiness is paramount. Whether facing wildfires, flash floods, or prolonged power outages, having a well-stocked disaster preparedness kit can mean the difference between safety and uncertainty.

Disasters strike swiftly, often leaving little time to gather necessities. That's why the Ruidoso Office of Emergency Management urges every household to maintain a basic emergency supply kit capable of sustaining each family member for at least 72 hours.

Key Items for Your Kit:

Water and Food

  • Water: Ensure one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation.

  • Food: Stock up on non-perishables like canned goods, protein bars, and dried fruits.

Clothing and Bedding

  • Clothing: Pack sturdy, weather-appropriate attire with extra socks and shoes.

  • Blankets/Sleeping Bags: Prepare warm bedding, especially vital in initial shelter setups.

First Aid Essentials

  • Medical Supplies: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze pads, adhesive tape, scissors, tweezers, a thermometer, and an N95 mask for emergencies.

  • Medications: Have a seven-day supply of prescriptions along with medical information.

Tools and Supplies

  • Light and Communication: Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank flashlight with extra batteries, plus an AM/FM or NOAA weather radio.

  • Whistle: Use it to signal for assistance in emergencies.

Personal Items

  • Important Documents: Safeguard copies of vital documents in a waterproof container.

  • Cash: Carry small denominations, as electronic transactions may not be available.

  • Emergency Contacts: Maintain a list of family, friends, and local emergency numbers.

  • Comfort Items: Include personal comforts like a favorite book or activities for downtime.

Special Considerations

  • Children and Pets: Prepare additional supplies such as baby formula, diapers, pet food, and extra water.

  • Elderly and Disabled: Accommodate specific needs with extra medical supplies and mobility aids.
